COMMUNITY ARCHIVES

BACKGROUND

This is a new shared project from Cork Traveller Visibility Group
(TVG) and Cork Traveller Women’s Network (CTWN), two Traveller led
community development organisations working for Traveller rights in
Cork City. This project aims to develop an accessible Traveller
community archive focusing on photos and other items celebrating
Traveller culture and activism in Cork City.

PLACE OF WORK

The Contracted Traveller community archivist will be based in Cork
Traveller Visibility Group’s office at *
Lower John Street, Cork. Depending on remote working requirements and
internal policies, the worker might be asked to work from home when
necessary, and might be asked to do some travel within Cork to attend
meetings and look at relevant material. Expenses for any additional
travel will be reimbursed.

CONTRACT / SALARY SCALE

The position is for one day a week (8 hours a week). The contract
commences in January *, and ends in January

THIS IS A SELF-EMPLOYED ROLE, RATHER THAN AN EMPLOYED ROLE. TVG ARE
WILLING TO ASSIST THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WITH SETTING UP AS
SELF-EMPLOYED, IF NECESSARY.

OVERVIEW

We are seeking a Traveller community Archivist to assist a Lead
Archivist in collating, cataloguing, digitising and displaying a
collection of photographs and materials relating to the history of
Traveller culture and activism in Cork, gathered by Cork Traveller
Women’s Network & Cork Traveller Visibility Group.

The collection documents the history and traditions of Travellers in
Cork and as such has the potential to fill gaps in the archival
representation of this community.

This role is suitable for a person who would like to build their
skills around developing a Traveller community archive.

JOB DESCRIPTION

* Work with a Lead archivist who will co-ordinate this project.
* Assist with identifying and gathering images and documentation to
add to the existing items gathered by TVG and CTWN.
* Assist with identifying, categorising and labelling of photos and
other items.
* Support outreach and communication to Travellers to gain their
consent around use of photos.
* Support digitisation of the images.
* Support a launch event at the Cork Public Museum.
* Assist the Lead Archivist in giving regular updates to the Project
Co-Ordinators throughout the project.
* Contribute towards videos or other social media postings which
will increase awareness of the collections and the community which
they document.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

* Applicants must be a member of the Traveller Community.
* Experience of working or volunteering with an archive or a
community-based Traveller culture / history project (desirable) or
willingness to learn (essential).
* A passion for Traveller heritage and activism and willingness to
learn skills relevant to developing a community archive (essential).
* Excellent verbal communication skills and organisational skills
(essential).
* Excellent literacy and Basic computer literacy (essential).
* An ability to work independently and as part of a team
(essential).
* Prior voluntary or paid experience of working a project with
agreed aims and timeframes (essential).
* An understanding of the work of Traveller community development
organisations (essential).
